UN Security Council vote on Gaza ceasefire delayed for 3rd day

In the United Nations chambers, delegates of the Security Council remain deadlocked on voting for a humanitarian resolution in Gaza with a third day of delays.

The Arab-backed resolution aims for UN officials to monitor aid corridors, with delegates now attempting to avoid a potential veto from the United States.

Sources say the vote is being pushed once again into Thursday morning after intense negotiations over the drafted plan, which the US doesn’t agree with.

The main point of contention remains to be regarding Israel losing control of the aid deliveries and the draft’s language over continuing hostilities.

While a vote awaits, destruction and bombardment continues in Gaza, where the Hamas-run Health Ministry says at least 46 Palestinians were killed in an airstrike near a refugee camp.

Other Gazan officials say the death toll has reached 20,000 at this time.

On Wednesday, the Security Council agreed to continue negotiations to allow for additional time for diplomacy.

Currently, Israel controls the limited aid and fuel deliveries into Gaza at two crossings, including the Rafah crossing from Egypt.

The US has already twice vetoed Security Council action since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that Israel says killed 1,200 people and saw 240 people taken hostage.

Meanwhile, it is being reported that Hamas’ top leader arrived in Egypt for talks aimed at brokering a temporary ceasefire and securing a new deal for Hamas to release Israeli hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
