Hamilton Police have arrested two foreign nationals from the United Kingdom involved in a roofing repair scam targeting senior citizens and vulnerable individuals.

On August 14 police received a fraud report from a homeowner on Barton Street East and Kenilworth Avenue. The male suspects — posing as a legitimate company called ‘D’Angelo Roofing & Masonry’ — convinced the victim to make a hefty down payment for urgent roof repairs. After receiving the initial funds they demanded more money before the victim realized she was being scammed.

Plainclothes officers from East End HEAT and the Financial Crimes Unit arrested the two men when they returned for more money. Both appeared in court and had their bail denied.

Police say the suspects entered Canada in late June, and that they believe there may be more victims across the GTA. The telephone number posted on the flyer handed out was Toronto-based — 437-522-7355.

Authorities advise residents to be cautious of unsolicited contractors going door-to-door, especially those who use pressure tactics, demand payment in cash or say they require a large down payment.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Financial Crimes Unit at 905-546-3840, or Crime Stoppers.
