The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling, ending constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place for almost 50 years.

This decision is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

The ruling came over a month after the leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito indicating the court was prepared to take this step.

Opponents say the decision is expected to disproportionately affect minority women who already face limited access to health care.
