U.S. President wants to buy American
Trade Minister Ed Fast says Canada will fight the “buy America” provisions in the new U.S. stimulus package.
U.S. President Barack Obama has proposed a $447 billion bill to help revive the stalled U.S. economy, but it could raise trade tension between Canada and the U.S.
The bill calls for construction or repair work on public sites to use iron, steel, or manufactured goods made only in the U.S.
But the act states that if using all-American products increases the cost of a project by more than 25%, the requirement will be waived.
Despite that, Fast says the provisions are not acceptable to Canada.
