The strike at the University of Toronto continues tonight after teaching assistants voted to reject a tentative deal. In a narrow vote this weekend, U of T teaching assistants rejected the University’s latest offer and stepped up pickets today.

The deal would have boosted annual salaries from $15 000 to $17 500. About 6 000 teaching assistants and course instructors went on strike on February 27th leading to a small number of class cancellations, unmarked papers, and delays crossing picket lines to get to classes. They’ve been without a contract for more than 10 months. Only about a third of the 6 000 workers affected voted on this latest offer.

York University TA’s also continue to strike. They walked off the job on March 3, also demanding compensation increases, classes were cancelled when the strike began but have gradually resumed.
