Two people were taken to hospital after a fire at a home on Upper Ottawa Street in Hamilton Monday afternoon.

Hamilton fire crews were called to a structure fire at the home near Mohawk Rd. around 3:20 p.m. They reported seeing heavy smoke in the area as they arrived on scene.

They found a well involved fire in a garage, which was quickly spreading into the main roof of the attached house.

Two residents were able to get out. The pair were treated on scene for smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

Officials have not yet provided a cause or damage estimate.

They say the garage and main roof of the home have extensive damage. The home itself also has significant smoke and water damage.
