Two Lovers and a Bear is a Canadian drama written and directed by Kim Nguyen (War Witch). The director premiered the film at the Cannes Film Festival this year before playing at TIFF. The film stars Dane DeHaan and Tatiana Maslany.
We are in the Great North, near the North Pole, in a modern town where about two hundred souls live precariously in minus fifty weather, and where roads lead to nowhere but the endless white. It is in this eerie lunar landscape that Lucy and Roman, two young tormented souls, fell in love. But now, ghosts from Lucy’s past are coming back, and she needs to run away or she will burn. Together, these lovers decide to make a leap for life, a leap for inner peace. They head out in the Great White, where the strangeness makes one feel he is travelling inside of himself.
“I feel one of the most important thing about crafting scenes, once they are written, is making sure they feel authentic, heartfelt and genuine,” Nguyen explains. “I couldn’t have imagined better artists than Tatiana and Dane to bring these qualities to the screen. They are extremely dedicated and focused on being in the moment, on letting the elements around them influence their work, and in that sense, I guess we all somehow tried to be the channels of something that’s bigger than us… In this case I guess that bigger thing was the mysterious, endless Arctic.”
