Two arrests made after ‘grand parent scam’ in Welland

Niagara police have arrested two people in connection to a fraud investigation in the City of Welland.
Police say a man in his 80s was scammed of $9,000 on Aug. 22. Further investigation found that the man had received a phone call from an unknown person who claimed to a be a grand child in legal peril. A second unknown person came on the phone, claiming to be a lawyer.
The man then attended his local bank to withdraw the money which was later picked up by a “carrier” from his home.
While the officer was investigation, the unknown suspects contacted the man and demanded another $10,000. Their attempt to pick up more money was unsuccessful and police were able to stop the grey 2007 Honda Civic in the Highway 406 and Queen Elizabeth Way area in St. Catharines.
24-year-old Souleyane Camara and 23-year-old Enio Martins from the Toronto area were charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.
Police ask anyone with informatio to contact them as investigations continue.
