21 year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been sentenced to die by lethal injection for the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. A jury reached the decision late this afternoon. The jury deliberated for more than 14 hours over three days to reach this verdict, which had to be unanimous. Tsarnaev, who was 19 years old at the time of the attack, was convicted on 30 counts for his role in the April 2013 bombing, and he was sentenced to death on six of those counts. Witnesses in court today say Tsarnaev had no visible reaction as the death sentence was announced. Prosecutors built their case around the emotional testimony of family and friends of those killed.. and injured survivors.  They called Tsarnaev “unrepentant,” and “unremorseful”, ultimately convincing the jury he should be punished to the full extent of the law — death by lethal injection.

Tsarnaev will likely be sent to the federal death row in Indiana. But this sentence isn’t the last word in this case, there will be an immediate mandatory direct appeal of the trial.
