Trump says Canadian efforts to stop fentanyl ‘not good enough’

Donald Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had an almost hour-long phone call Wednesday to talk about trade and fentanyl.
Trump said they talked about fentanyl coming into the U.S. from Canada, and that what Canada has done up to this point is ‘not good enough’.
On Truth Social, Trump said when it comes to the flow of fentanyl coming through the borders of Canada and Mexico, nothing has convinced him that it has stopped.
The president said Trudeau ensures that it has gotten better, but responded by saying it’s not good enough.
He went on to say the call ended in a “somewhat” friendly manner.
Trump also wrote that Trudeau was unable to tell him when the Canadian election is taking place, saying that he believes Trudeau is trying to use the issue to stay in power.
However, Trudeau has already announced he is stepping down as leader of the Liberal party, with a new leader being selected Sunday.
The White House press secretary was asked Wednesday about the phone call between the leaders and said, “for the last four years, unfortunately our neighbours to the north and the south, Canada and Mexico respectively, have allowed America to be a dumping ground, not just for illegal aliens but for illegal poisonous deadly fentanyl – which is now the number one killer of young people aged 18 to 34.”
U.S. federal statistics show U.S. border authorities seized 21,899 lbs of fentanyl in the 2024 fiscal year.
Of that amount 43 lbs were seized at the Canadian border – that’s about 0.2 per cent.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Wednesday that she spoke with the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio by phone about the tariffs.
She said it’s not clear what Trump wants with his tariffs.
