Prime Minister Justin Trudeau toured Google’s new Canadian headquarters this afternoon. It was just one of three stops in the Kitchener -Waterloo region for Trudeau.

Google opened its first office in the the Waterloo region back in 2005 with just 4 employees, now it has 400. Their new high-tech 185 000 square foot office space features themes floors, a barista bar, food bars, a gym, which even includes a rock-climbing wall.

Nearly 60% of Google Canada’s employees are University of Waterloo graduates. That’s where Trudeau started his morning, getting a firsthand look at a research science lab. Speaking to a large crowd, the Prime Minister says he plans to spend $12 million on research into clean water technologies.

The brand new building and investment is seen as a vote of confidence for the region hailed as the silicon valley of the north.

“A big boost economically, this is 350 jobs at least for people who are highly qualified and who are emerging from other jobs in Waterloo and Kitchener area these days.” Peter Carr from the University of Waterloo.

And Google Canada says they’re always looking for new talent.
