Justin Trudeau will face his first question period as Prime Minister in the House of Commons this afternoon as the Parliament Hill gets back to normal after last week’s speech from the throne.

Parliament is only expected to sit this week before breaking until late January.

The short sitting will be focused on debating the throne speech, but will also give the government time to introduce bills to create a new tax bracket for those earning over $200,000 while reducing the rate for the middle-income tax bracket.

The changes will include rolling back the annual limit on tax-free savings accounts to $5500, effective January 1st.

The new federal government is expected to admit this week that the plan won’t be revenue neutral.

Almost from the moment it was announced, economists predicted that a planned new tax bracket for those earning more than $200,000 a year would not generate the amount of money the Liberals estimated.

The one-week sitting is also expected to give new MPs and rookie cabinet members a chance to get acquainted with how the House of Commons functions.
