Hamiltonians will have the opportunity to travel back in time this weekend. The HO Model Engineers Society will be hosting an open house to showcase their modelling of the Hamilton railway scene of the 1950’s.
Its a blast from the past, with no detail spared. A chance to see what Hamilton looked like almost 70 years ago. Buildings, streets, and not to mention- trains. It’s the history of Hamilton’s transportation system. One that was elaborate and lively.
“There was a lot of railway action in Hamilton at that time, there still is a fair bit. The main was was called the Toronto Hamilton and Buffalo, which was actually based here in Hamilton”
The HO Model Engineer Society, or HOMES Club, creates models and replicas from photos, maps, and plans. It’s taken nine years to get to this stage, and there still much more work to be done.
What’s now the Hamilton GO station is Bayer’s favourite part of Hamilton’s transportation history. The building today still has Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo engravings. Bayer says its a big city station in a smaller market.
Not only is this a glimpse to the past of Hamilton’s transportation system, if you look very closely you can see a look to the future with the LRT. Bayer says the LRT would be an exciting development for the city.
The HOMES Club will have an open house on Sunday from 10 to 5. All proceeds raised will go to keeping the volunteer organization re-creating history.
