Tow truck drivers protest Ontario legislation

About 1,500 tow trucks came to Queen’s Park to protest Ontario’s new auto insurance law.

They’re fighting legislation that was passed on November 20th. The province says the new law will regulate the towing industry and reduce auto insurance rates.

But truck drivers argue it will affect their ability to do their jobs. “We don’t want this bill 15 to stop us from working. It starts an hour, sometimes we’re at an accident for 5, 6 hours. We’re not going to just leave a scene dirty and not clean up the highway.”

“We want to work with the insurance companies and reduce the cost, but we don’t want to stop us from making a living as well.”

Part of the legislation limits the number of hours tow truck drivers can operate each day. It’s a move drivers say will hinder their ability to get to customers during poor weather conditions.
