Toronto van attack suspect identified as Alek Minassian

UPDATED
The 25-year-old man suspected of running down multiple pedestrians in Toronto appeared in court Tuesday morning wearing a white jumpsuit and his hands cuffed behind his back.
Alek Minassian, of Richmond Hill, is facing 10 charges of first-degree murder and 13 charges of attempted murder after a white rental van weaved in and out of traffic on Yonge St. around 1:30 p.m. Monday and struck a number of people.
Minassian was arrested after a short standoff with a police officer who did not fire his own gun despite the suspect appearing to aim a weapon at him.
Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders said Minassian was not previously known to police. He added that it was too early to suggest a possible motive for the deadly incident.
A LinkedIn profile for a man of the same name as the suspect says he is a student at Seneca College in Toronto.
The death toll rose to at least 10 people late Monday following the horrific attack on Yonge Street in the city’s north end. Fifteen other people were injured in the incident.
A makeshift memorial has been set up with flowers and messages of love and condolences being written on signs.
Toronto police are expected to provide an update on the incident Tuesday afternoon.
