The man accused of planning explosive terror attacks in downtown Toronto made another appearance before the immigration and refugee board today but this time cameras were allowed inside.
Jahanzeb Malik appeared via video conference from his Lindsay Ontario detention centre for his detention review hearing. The adjudicator with the immigration and refugee board decided to keep the 33-year old Pakistani citizen detained to allow further investigation.
Wearing an orange jumpsuit, wrist and ankle shackles and appearing both tired and distant at times. This was the first time we saw Malik, who was arrested March 9th as part of a 6 month long RCMP investigation.
Police allege that he attempted to recruit an undercover officer to make explosives that would detonate remotely, destroying the US consulate and several financial buildings in downtown Toronto. Malik was seen shaking his head as the allegations were read out.
The adjudicator said that based on the findings that led to his arrest and that he already has a criminal record, Malik poses a threat to the public and was a flight risk. The Canadian border service agency is working through proceedings to have Malik deported instead of going through criminal courts.
The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday April 14th
