A Toronto man is dead after being struck by several vehicles on Highway 401 near Keele Street early Tuesday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police say they received reports of a PT cruiser driving erratically when it lost a tire around 3:30 a.m.

The car continued driving on its rim for sometime before pulling onto the left shoulder of the collectors lanes.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the driver got out of car and entered the eastbound lanes where he was struck by several vehicles.

Schmidt says the man may have exited the vehicle to try and get help, or to assess the damage on his car.

OPP’s collision reconstruction team is currently investigating the collision.

The victim’s identity has not been released but police say he is 31-year-old man from Toronto.

Highway 401 eastbound collector lanes were closed for a portion of the morning commute but have since been reopened.

Police are asking any witnesses to contact them and are reminding drivers to stay in your vehicle if you are involved in an accident and call 911.
