Toronto city council has voted to rename Dundas Street, as well as remove Henry Dundas’s name from other public infrastructure.

Dundas was infamous for delaying Britain’s abolition of slavery by 15 years.

Although he never physically stepped foot in the city of Toronto, numerous amenities carry his name.

Toronto Mayor John Tory says the city should not be celebrating the 18th-century Scottish politician. He says having the name present in the city goes against the inclusivity Toronto is trying to achieve.

The city will hold a public consultation to find a new name for the street, which is expected to wrap up in the second quarter of next year.
