Tim’s Vermeer

Tim’s Vermeer is a documentary chronicling inventor Tim Jenison’s obsession with the works of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Jenison, founder of the technology company NewTek, attempts to use modern day optics and technology to recreate Vermeer’s The Music Lesson. He even goes as far as building a replica of Vermeer’s studio to ensure that the conditions he paints under are completely accurate.

The famous magician duo Penn and Teller made the film, with Penn producing and Teller directing it. The theory Jenison is testing is the belief that Vermeer used a camera obscura, an early form of camera where light passes through a small hole and is projected on an opposite surface. No evidence that Vermeer and his Dutch contemporaries used optical devices has ever surfaced.

Tim’s Vermeer is rated PG.
