Time Magazine has revealed its first-ever kid of the year, an initiative meant to recognize young leaders who are making a positive impact in their communities.

Gitanjali Rao was selected from thousands of nominees. The 15-year-old is a scientist and inventor from Colorado.

She uses technology to help solve issues that she is passionate about, like contaminated drinking water and cyber-bullying.

Rao will be featured on the Dec. 14 cover of Time.
