Ticats keep on winning

It’s a winning formula and it’s built on a pretty simple foundation. Defense and special teams, with just enough offense. It has helped the Ticats win 4 straight games and they are atop the CFL East with a 6 and 7 record. But the Ticats have scored one TD in their last 2 games, and putting the ball in the end zone is something they have to get better at.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have gone two straight games without completing a touchdown pass, but winning is all Kent Austin cares about.

Kent Austin, Head Coach: “At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is wins and losses, that’s it. They don’t say how many, they just say did you win. We’re leading the league in passing and 3rd or 4th in overall offense so, the points, in the last game just came down to making more plays.”

Zach Collaros: “Yah, but we’ve gotta’ score though. That’s the bottom line, we’ve gotta’ score.”

Clearly frustrated, Collaros says he’s moved on from the team’s fourth straight win at Tim Hortons Field, and is now focused on Friday’s game in Toronto. He’s well aware that Hamilton has the league’s worst red-zone record, converting at a 39 percent rate.

Zach Collaros: “Players gotta’ make plays when the spotlight is on them, we got to get better at that for sure.”

The Cats’ inability to connect on touchdowns has meant Justin Medlock has been kept busy these past few weeks. He was a perfect five for five on Saturday night.

Five field goals in one game matches Medlock’s season high — he did it back in August, also against the B.C. Lions. 7 field goals in a game is his career high in the CFL — he’s done it twice: once in 2009 and again in 2011. Oddly enough, those games were also against B.C.”

But no matter who the opponent is, medlock would prefer to be kicking converts: “Hopefully there’s a time where I’ll hit 5, 6 extra points and it will be when everything starts clicking. It’ll be good.”
