Brampton’s fire chief is crediting a basement tenant with rescuing a young girl from a house fire that claimed three lives. Neighbours say a family of four lived in the home.

According to fire-fighters the tenant escaped his unit and broke down the door to the main floor to get to the girl.  She was taken to hospital suffering from third-degree burns.  School board officials say the survivor is an elementary student.

The fire happened around four Tuesday morning.  Fire-fighters had the blaze under control in 10 minutes and found three bodies in the bedrooms of the main unit.  It’s believed the family of four, a husband, wife and their two daughters had been renting the home for about five years.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating.
