The Canadian Coast Guard says one of its helicopters has crashed in the Arctic and three people are dead.

The Coast Guard says the aircraft crashed Monday night in the M’clure Strait, off the coast of Banks Island in the Western Arctic.

A Transportation Safety Board official says the helicopter was a Messer-Schmitt Bo-105.

The dead include Marc Thibault, commanding officer of the ship, helicopter pilot Daniel Dube, and Klaus Hochheim, a University of Manitoba science researcher.

The TSB is investigating.
