The NDP are alleging Hamilton MPP Paul Miller was a member of a FaceBook group promoting Islamophobic and racist views, adding that it was consistent with an old pattern of behaviour.

In a released statement on Wednesday, the NDP says in part “…our party’s vetting process showed that Mr. Miller was a member of the Facebook group called ‘worldwide coalition against Islam’….”

The party says allegations against him go back as far as 2018. That’s when a complaint was lodged against him, alleging homophobic and racist remarks, and the complaint was taken to the human rights tribunal. The party says that matter was satisfactorily resolved by all parties.

Miller is 71 years old and for 15-years he represented the provincial NDP for the riding of Hamilton east Stoney Creek.

Miller spoke to media at Queens Park, denying the allegations and calling it ‘cancel culture.’ “I don’t know this group, I don’t know anything about it. It’s absolutely absurd… in all the years I’ve been in politics, I have never posted anything on Twitter or Facebook, frankly, I’m not that great on the internet. My staff always did it. So if there’s anything on there it would’ve been former staff who I had difficulties with before, some were let go or fired, present staff would have access and the NDP would have access through the vetting process…”

Miller says he intends to run in the next election as an independent candidate.
