It’s been almost two months since a fire broke out at the YMCA men’s residence in downtown Hamilton and while progress has been made, there’s more work required before everyone can move back in.

Fundraising efforts and campaigns are collecting money to help get the job done, including a 72-kilometre journey from Brantford to Hamilton, with stops along the way.

It’s called the Long Walk Home, and it involved seven people including YMCA staff and volunteers who made their way from Brantford to Hamilton over a two-day period.

They departed Friday from the YMCA in Brantford and finished the walk at the YMCA in downtown Hamilton on Saturday afternoon to the sounds of cheering supporters.

The walkers were raising money for YMCA programs, including the men’s residence. The walk was organized before the building caught on fire in July, which displaced 174 men and caused $1.2 million in damages.

As of Sept. 14 the campaign had surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $20,000 and collected $67,000 for the YMCA men’s residence.
