Sherwood opened in 1967 and is in desperate need of repairs. Two years ago, Sherwood was listed as being in the worst condition of all Hamilton’s high schools, nearly forcing it to shut it’s doors. $2.8 million has already been put into the school, but rising costs and asbestos in the building put the repairs to a halt. Now a study estimates a complete renovation would cost up to $37.5 million.

“The $37.5 million is just a snapshot of what it would cost if we did all of the work in the building, but we never do that with our older facilities.” Says Todd White from the HWDSB

In fact, the board says no school would get that kind of funding to renovate that’s why they’ve asked the province to fund a new school in the same area. If it’s not approved it’s on to plan B, assessing the needs of the board’s 13 schools and using their own budget to renovate. Until the numbers are in renovations will be on pause but the board has confirmed,

“Sherwood is going to remain open at the Sherwood site.”
