Thanksgiving fun!

The weather couldn’t have been more cooperative today for anyone who wanted to get outside and enjoy fall activities; and there is a lot going on in the region to celebrate the season.
We saw huge smiles everywhere we went today, and we drove by a sign in front of a church that perfectly summed up the feeling ‘ Thanksgiving is not a season, it’s a way of life.’
It was an outside kind of day, whether you were taking family photos and serenely watching the salmon spawn at Lowville Park, or having a raucous ride on the midway at the Rockton World’s Fair. It’s the time of year to celebrate the harvest and all things agriculture.
We can learn from the experts with animals, and have a tactile experience with nature, and for some families, Thanksgiving means a trip to Springridge Farm.
“There’s kids playing everywhere, there’s pumpkin patches, there’s hay, games, all kinds of great things here. Chickens walking around. It’s awesome.”
“Pumpkin tarts, butter tarts, these are the flavours of fall. I call it, putting on another layer of insulation before winter.”
“You gotta get your pumpkin here, and get some pumpkin lattes, and pumpkin muffins and pumpkin pie. We’re rolling back our scales this weekend. 10 pounds.”
“How to pick a great pumpkin is, it always has to have a long stem, it has to be flat at the bottom, and flat at the sides so you can carve it.”
Kids also have strategy when picking apples.
“I look for the biggest ones and get them.”
Fall is the perfect time to get outside and be thankful for the beautiful place we live, but this is also a time of giving. The Good Shepherd Thanksgiving dinner is tomorrow afternoon at 3 on Mary Street. Volunteers will be serving a full turkey dinner to anyone who needs one.
