A tentative agreement has been reached between the city of Hamilton and its biggest union, CUPE local 5167.
Three thousand city employees who pick up the garbage downtown, repair roads, work in city recreation centres, and enforce bylaws – to name just some of the departments – would have been in a legal strike position as of midnight, although they hadn’t announced any plans to walk out.
The deal was announced late last evening after a marathon bargaining session.
Details of the proposed contract will be presented to members at a special meeting before a ratification vote Monday.
