A teenager who pleaded guilty to the murder of 14-year-old Devan Selvey appeared in a Hamilton courtroom on Friday.

The teen, who can’t be identified under a court-ordered publication ban, fatally stabbed Selvey behind Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School on Oct. 7, 2019.

He was 14 years old at the time and is now 16.

The teen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder back in November.

During the court proceedings last month, an agreed statement of facts said the two boys hardly knew each other.

On the day of the stabbing, Selvey and a friend saw a group of teens hanging out across the street from the school, including a teen who Selvey believed, had stolen his bike a month earlier.

Selvey contacted his sister and his friend’s parents who came to the school and confronted the teens.

An argument broke out and bear mace was sprayed by the older brother of the teen convicted in Selvey’s death.

Selvey chased after the group and his mother followed in her vehicle, urging her son to get inside.

As his mother stepped out of her vehicle, Selvey was stabbed from behind.

On Friday, a court date for sentencing was scheduled to take place. However, the youth’s lawyer says several variables have complicated the matter and the hearing was put over to Jan. 21, 2022.
