A teenage boy is in hospital with life-altering injuries after he was struck by a vehicle in Hamilton early Monday morning.

The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. when police say the teen who was riding a scooter at the intersection of Nash Road South and Glen Echo Drive was struck by the vehicle.

Officers say he suffered a head injury.

“Unconscious and in life threatening condition, he was immediately transported to hospital and as of 10:30 this morning we received information that the severity of his injuries have been down-graded to now life-altering.” says Indy Bharaj of the Hamilton Police Service.

“The individual remains at hospital and our traffic safety unit continues to investigate this collision.”

Police say that the details of who had the right of way and the direction the teen was travelling at the time of the incident remain under investigation.

Investigators say the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with police.

The driver, who wished to remain anonymous, told CHCH News the teen was heading east from Glen Echo Drive.

“I was heading south on Nash Road, I just finished dropping a friend off at work. Coming up to the lights at Glen Echo, I had a green go through and just sort of, a guy on an electric scooter thing came flying through the red light into the intersection. I couldn’t get out of the way from hitting him… hopefully the young guy is okay.”

Students from nearby Glendale Secondary School say the area where the incident happened can be dangerous, especially when traffic is heavy in the morning.

The police tape that had blocked off the area has since been removed as Nash Road reopened, though police have yet to comment on a knife that appeared next to the taped off scooter.

When asked about the knife, officers said the collision investigation remains to be their highest priority at this time and all items that were within the taped off section off the road will be brought in as evidence and examined.

Detectives are now reviewing surveillance footage as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact police.
