Teen charged in the death of 14-year-old Devan Selvey pleads guilty to a weapons charge

One of the teens charged in connection with the killing of 14-year-old Devan Selvey walked out of court following a verdict that shocked Selvey’s family.

The 18-year old teen who can not be identified because of a court-ordered publication ban plead guilty to unauthorized possession of a weapon. He was given a suspended sentence and 15 months probation. He will also face roughly three years of court supervision, a five-year ban on any possession of weapons, and must avoid contact with the Selvey family.

The crown prosecutor originally wanted 18 months of probation, while the defence wanted six months of probation with a conditional discharge.

The 18-year-old originally faced other charges of assault with a weapon and administering a noxious substance, but they were withdrawn in court.

He and his 14-year-old brother were both initially charged with first-degree murder, but that charge was dropped last December, leaving the younger brother as the one accused of stabbing Devan to death on October 7th outside Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.

The trial for the 14-year old is set to begin in early November.
