Peel Police began investigating the incident early this month, after social media video depicting the burning was brought to their attention.

Two 16-year-old boys were arrested on June 17.

“Investigators referred both young persons to the Youth Pre-Charge Diversion Program,” said a police release issued on Tuesday.

This allows for extrajudicial measures to be considered for young people who have allegedly committed an offence.

If either of the boys are unsuccessful in completing the diversion program, criminal charges could be laid.

“The Peel Regional Police Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Bureau have been actively involved throughout this investigation, and our officers take all reports of hate-motivated incidents and crimes very seriously,” said the police release.
