Ted Danson Fights for the Oceans

One of the most popular actors of this generation was in Toronto on Monday morning, urging Canadians to get involved with the oceans that surround our country on three coasts. Ted Danson may be best known for his roles on “CSI: Las Vegas” and the 80’s sitcom “Cheers”, but when he’s not acting, he works tirelessly in an effort to make the world’s oceans not only cleaner, but more economically viable.

Danson was in Toronto to help launch Oceana Canada, part of the global organization that he joined a dozen years ago. His crusade began with a local protest to stop off-shore drilling near his Santa Monica home, more than two decades ago. From there, his passion and the organization he now represents, have grown into a global force preaching sustainability for the waters of the world.

Canada’s northern Arctic is becoming a target for world fishing fleets for the first time, as more and more open water free of sea ice, makes commercial fishing a possibility. And while Danson generally steers clear of international politics and debates over global warming, there is one thing he is certain Canada must do in the Arctic. He says Canadians must push the government to let those scientists take the lead on setting targets, managing quotas, and establishing sustainable policy that will provide both ecological, and economic benefits for decades to come.
