Take Back the Night is coming to Hamilton streets tonight. It’s an international event that aims to end sexual and domestic violence.

This is the first in-person event since the COVID-19 pandemic began so the organizers do expect a large turnout.

This year’s theme is Revolution Rooted in Love. The event is now for all genders so everyone is welcome to join. Take Back the Night began decades ago, it started with women marching down the street at night as they protested against violence against women and over the years it’s evolved including sexual violence and street harassment.

There will be activities for all ages and artwork on display. At 8 p.m. there will be live music, and an Indigenous market followed by speeches.

The march will begin at 8:20 p.m. at Hamilton city hall. Participants will walk down to James Street and then to King Street and circle back around at Hess Street and end back at city hall around 9:20 p.m.

The organizers of SACHA, the Sexual Assault Centre for Hamilton, and the area say everyone experiences sexual violence and street harassment so everyone should be able to participate.

There will be several bus delays and detours tonight.
