SUV collides with school bus

Seventeen school children are okay but one man is in serious condition after a bus and SUV collided on Guelph Line Wednesday afternoon.

Just to look at the front end of the SUV, you can imagine the violence of the impact and the extent of the man’s injuries. The entire driver’s side is shattered, and if you look further down the road to the school bus, you can see significant damage to the front left wheel and hood. Just the distance between the two vehicles is a good indication of the strength of the impact.

The car’s driver had to be airlifted to the Hamilton General. He’s 68 years old. Fire officials say he has serious injuries to his left side and possibly a partial amputation of his shoulder and head injuriesl. He was trapped for about 20 minutes before the fire department could free him.

Dave Pratt is the Deputy Fire Chief of the Milton Fire Dept.: “They had to transported by air ambulance.”

As for the school bus, all 17 kids and the driver made if off safely. One child was checked out for complaints of back and neck pain. They were coming from Brookville Public School just five minutes up the road. Parents came to pick them up. A few kids I spoke to seemed a little shaken but alright.

A reconstruction team is still on site here piecing together how the crash happened. It appears the bus was traveling this way and the SUV was headed in the opposite direction. There are lots of car parts and debris on the ground so crews will have to determine whether a vehicle malfunction played a role.
