Bronte GO reopens after ‘suspicious package’ closes station

Service at the Bronte GO station has resumed after being suspended for several hours Monday following a police investigation.

Halton police took to social media shortly before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to warn the public to stay clear of the area as they responded to what they were calling a “suspicious package.”

The discovery led police to shut down the entire station, which halted all transit services in and out of the station for several hours.

There was a cascading effect on traffic throughout the region, with many who rely on public transit being left stranded.

The suspicious package was initially discovered around 5:30 a.m. and required authorities to bring out their explosive disposal unit to the scene, which took until 8:45 a.m.

Nearly five hours passed until authorities were able to confirm that the package was not explosive in nature.

Investigators remained on scene and said they would still need to determine whether or not the package was left there on purpose, and intentionally made to resemble an explosive device.

Service Disruptions

For a period of time Monday morning, all train and bus traffic in and out of the station was temporarily suspended.

Service on the Lakeshore West line continued between Hamilton’s West Harbour GO station and the Appleby station, but was unable to pass through Bronte.

The same was true for the adjacent stations east of Bronte, bound for Union.

Around noon, a spokesperson from Metrolinx told CHCH News that the police investigation has been completed and that regular service to the Bronte GO station had resumed.
