A family is grieving the loss of a daughter, sister and friend. 34 year old Jenna Gazzola, a teacher at St. Charles Adult and Continuing Education was murdered in her apartment on Monday. Hamilton police arrested and charged her neighbour, 27 year old Shane Shakeshaft with first degree murder. They both lived on the 9th floor of 100 forest avenue. Jenna lived at #902, Shane at #908.
Detective Dave Oleniuk was in the courtroom today when Shakeshaft made a brief appearance. The accused was dressed in a white jump suit with his hands tucked inside his sleeves. Jenna’s mom and dad, a Guelph police staff sergeant, sat together holding hands. Next to them her two brothers as Shakeshaft walked by.
Police say the superintendent of the apartment made the tragic discovery yesterday after noticing Jenna’s dog out in the hallway. Police say there are signs that Shane Shakeshaft forced his way inside Jenna’s apartment. They are still trying to find out why but say it may have been sexually motivated.
Police believe there was a struggle inside and that Jenna tried to fight back but can’t say how she was killed. A post mortem is being conducted.
Hamlton police are looking for other tenants to come forward with any observations over the last few days. Shakeshaft will return to court on April 26th.
