Suspect in Charlston shooting arrested following manhunt

The suspect in last night’s church shooting in South Carolina is on his way back to Charleston after being arrested in Shelby, North Carolina. Police arrested 21 year old Dylann Roof without resistance.

President Barack Obama says the nine people shot dead last night shows the need for a national reckoning on gun violence in america.

21 year old Dylann Roof was arrested following an intense, nationwide manhunt. He suspect was taken into custody during a traffic stop, just before noon. Police say Roof was armed at the time but surrendered peacefully.

Police say yesterday the suspect entered the historic black church, spent an hour in a bible study class before pulling out a gun and opening fire.

8 people were killed in the church, a ninth later died in hospital. One of the victims was the church pastor and South Carolina’s State Senator.

A survivor, told police the shooter spared her life to tell “what happened”.

Dylann Roof , had a previous criminal record for drug offences but no known affiliation with white supremacist groups. Rood’s uncle described his nephew as quiet and soft-spoken and said Roof had been given a .45 caliber pistol for his 21st birthday.
