The trail for the 51 year old man charged with first degree murder in the stabbing death of an 18 year old got under way on Tuesday. The incident happened near Hess Village in 2013 and the accused killer, Raleigh Stubbs, is not currently in custody. He has been out on bail for more than a year.
The crown began the day calling the murder of 18 year old David Pereira “a case about revenge”. On the stand, witnesses testified that Stubbs had been drinking the night of the murder and had become increasingly agitated after being denied entry into a club. A neighbour, Catherine Crooks, testified that at one point, Stubbs ran to her apartment asking to her to call 911 because he had been in an altercation with a group of teens. Shortly after, two teens showed up outside her apartment balcony. Crooks spoke to them and was able to diffuse the situation. She said the teen thanked her and left.
Stubbs then called police. One officer, James Creighton, testified that Stubbs appeared to have been drinking and was agitated. The officer testified that Stubbs told him, “if punks like these attack him, he would stab him.”
The trial is expected to last three weeks.
