Strong winds wreak havoc in southern Ontario

Strong wind gusts on Sunday afternoon left thousands without power across southern Ontario.

A weather warning was posted by Environment Canada saying damaging southwest winds with gusts of 90 km/h were expected in Hamilton, Halton, Niagara and most of southern Ontario. There were reports that one elderly woman was blown over in Oakville. The Hamilton Police Marine Unit issued a warning asking people to stay off the piers and away from the building waves. The strong winds caused some tree damage and isolated power outages in areas.

Part of a tree collapsed onto the road blocking traffic in downtown Hamilton. Alectra Utilities says their crews have been restoring power to parts of the city affected by the wind storm.

A tree was also blown down in Stoney Creek on Lake Avenue Dr. and the road was closed to traffic.

Heading towards Toronto there were major power outages affecting thousands. Peel Regional Police say the conditions are dangerous and reminded drivers everywhere to treat an intersection without working traffic lights as a four way stop.
