Stolen Memorial plaque found during traffic stop

Two men have been charged with theft over $5000, after Hamilton police found the Dieppe Veterans’ Memorial plaque in the back of a car.

During a routine traffic stop in the area of Woodward and Glow Ave., police say they saw the plaque along with a backpack and break and enter tools sitting on the back seat of the owner’s Hyundai.

The plaque, weighing 150-200 lbs is 2 x 4 feet with a depiction of the Dieppe Veterans Memorial Park. It is estimated at $30 000 and has since been returned to the City.

The Dieppe Veterans Memorial Park on Beach Blvd. is located approximately 3 km away from the traffic stop.

46-year-old Randy Malette and 44-year-old Robert Norton both of Hamilton have both been charged with theft and stolen property. The driver was also wanted by police for failing to appear in court.
