Stiles to be confirmed as Ontario’s NDP leader earlier than planned

Marit Stiles will be confirmed as Ontario’s New Democrats’ leader on Feb. 4, a month earlier than planned.
The Toronto-area MPP is the sole contender for the party leadership and dismissed suggestions last month that there is a lack of enthusiasm in the running.

Stiles requires a majority of party members’ support before she can secure the job and become leader of the Official Opposition in the legislature.
Peter Tabuns has served as the interim NDP leader since former leader Andrea Horwath announced her resignation in June.

Stiles has represented the riding of Davenport since 2018 after serving as a school trustee.
She notes that after being elected leader, her focus will be on defeating Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford in 2026.
