Steel workers give back

Hamilton steelworkers did their part to spread holiday cheer Monday morning and give back to the community.

During their area council meeting more than 38-thousand dollars was handed out to local outreach programs. St. Matthew’s House, Wesley Urban Ministries, United Way and Food Share were on hand to receive their funds and toys.

Food Share received more than 25-thousand dollars. Seventeen-thousand people in the Hamilton area rely on food banks every month. Meaning this contribution from the steelworkers will go a long way.
Rachel O’Reilly is with Hamilton Food Share: “They’ve made a difference to so many people this holiday season. Every dollar that is donated to Hamilton Food Share, raises approximately five-dollars worth of food.”

Darren Green represents the Hamilton Steelworkers: “We’ve lost so many manufacturing jobs in the Southern Ontario area, we recognize that there’s people out there that are not as well off as us and we just want to give back.”

The steelworkers also made donations to Simcoe Community Cupboard, Brantford Food Bank and Salvation Army Niagara.
