An employee with the city of Hamilton is out of a job, after allegedly spending city money on items for her house.
Ramona Maharaj was a superintendent within the Parks Department. City councillors met behind closed doors today to discuss the matter.

It is alleged that Maharaj was ordering items for her personal house when placing orders for the city.

How much was spent is unknown but amounts were not racked up on a city credit card as initially suspected. There were home improvement and landscaping purchase orders including patio furniture. The city’s finance staff flagged the purchases sometime over the past week.

“We will be consulting with Hamilton Police Services. It is a case of fraudulent behaviour. I’m not sure we are characterizing it as theft but it is fraudulent behaviour. The employee in question is no longer employed with the city of Hamilton. All I can say is that person is no longer employed with the City of Hamilton and we have met and discussed the issue and she is no longer an employee with the City of Hamilton.” announced City Spokesperson Mike Kirkopoulos.

Kirkopoulos say 3 other male employees who are supervisors will be suspended. He says some are long time employees of the city. Hamilton police will be notified and take over the investigation.
