Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the long awaited sequel to the original trilogy of Star Wars films. J. J. Abrams directs from a script he co-wrote with Michael Arndt and The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan. The film stars original trilogy cast members alongside a new batch of heroes including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Lupita Nyong’o.

Set thirty years after the climactic Battle of Endor that ended Return of the JediThe Force Awakens follows Rey, a young scavenger on the desert planet of Jakku, whose world gets upended after stumbling across a droid, the spherical BB-8. Also along for the ride is a reformed stormtrooper named Finn and a crack Resistance pilot named Poe Dameron.

In an interview with Wired, Abrams described how the film will cater to fans without alienating newcomers to the series. “We wanted to tell a story that had its own self-contained beginning, middle, and end but at the same time, like A New Hope, implied a history that preceded it and also hinted at a future to follow. When Star Wars first came out, it was a film that both allowed the audience to understand a new story but also to infer all sorts of exciting things that might be. In that first movie, Luke wasn’t necessarily the son of Vader, he wasn’t necessarily the brother of Leia, but it was all possible. The Force Awakens has this incredible advantage, not just of a passionate fan base but also of a backstory that is familiar to a lot of people.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is rated PG.
