Stalingrad is a fictional interpretation of the decisive battle in the Russian city during WWII. The story follows two groups of soldiers and their fight against the German occupation. As they defend their positions, both groups encounter women hiding from the fighting, who end up changing the perspective of the soldier’s battles in very different ways.

Stalingrad was a landmark achievement in Russian film when it was released last year. It was the highest grossing Russian film in 2013, and was also the first Russian production shot in IMAX 3D. The film was shot on a large-scale replica of the bombed out city, built outside of St. Petersberg, and included a copy of the well known “Children’s Circle Dance” fountain featuring six children dancing around a crocodile. The fountain was notable after the real-life battle due to the juxtaposition of its happy subject matter against the war-torn city.

Stalingrad is rated 14A.
