St. Catharines woman hit by car, dies

A 67-year old woman has died after being hit by a car in St. Catharines today.

Police say they received a complaint about a pickup truck speeding and driving erratically around 4:00 this morning. They were able to find the car and stop it on Highway 406, but as the officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped off. Police say the driver later lost control of his vehicle on Queen Street and hit a pedestrian. The man tried to run from the area but he was arrested in a nearby backyard an hour later.

The woman was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Pira-sath Aiyathurai, 30, of Brampton is facing a number of charges including impaired driving causing death.
