St. Catharines mayor asks for ‘patience’ as city crews work to clear streets

St. Catharines’ mayor says the city is working diligently to clear snow from roadways after the region was blanketed with roughly 50 centimetres of snowfall.

“I’m just asking for patience as this has been the most significant snowstorm that we’ve had since 1977,” said Walter Sendzik in a video posted on Twitter. “Our crews are working overtime to get these streets clear.”

Sendzik said some residents have been frustrated by the city’s response to the snowfall.

“It’s going to take a long time to get this heavy snow out of here,” said Sendzik. “We’ve got private contractors working. We’ve got our crews working overtime but I’m just going to ask our community to be a little bit more patient for our roads to be cleared.”

He also called on residents with snowblowers and youth to help neighbours who may need it while the city continues to deal with the fallout from Monday’s storm.

The city experienced more than an average month’s worth of snow on Monday.

The storm prompted school closures and cancellations across the province with many remaining closed on Tuesday due to poor road conditions.
