St. Catharines man arrested following lengthy stand-off with police

Niagara police have arrested a man following a lengthy stand-off in St. Catharines.
On Sunday at around 3:23 p.m., police responded to reports of an armed person at a building in the area of Geneva Street and Welland Avenue.
Police say a property manager had been threatened by a man with a knife. Officers located the man on the roof of the building armed with a knife. He refused to drop the knife and officers from the NRPS Emergency Task Unit and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene.
The man was then contained on the roof and officers were able to access the roof by ladder. Geneva Street between North Street and Welland Avenue was closed while negotiations were ongoing.
Police say after a lengthy stand-off, the man was arrested at 3:15 a.m.
Rory Docherty, 28, of St. Catharines has been charged with assault with a weapon. He was transported to local hospital for medical care and remains there currently. Police say he will be released on a Form 10 Undertaking with a future court date.
