St. Catharines geese problem

St. Catharines is facing a goose population explosion. Some residents are complaining these birds are so aggressive and they will attack.

Monday night city council vowed to fight back. They decided to round these birds up and ship them out. From Rennie Park to Lakeside Park and up and down the Welland Canal Parkway. St. Catharines is a magnet for Canada Geese. City councillor Bruce Williamson says he’s hearing some stories about the aggressive geese. “A family was crossing at the pier and one of the children was attacked. The more people you talk to, the more you find the geese are being negatively aggressive.”

St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik says the Pan Am rowers were complaining that the Henley course is the worst they’ve seen for geese problems. One sculler had to leave the race after she was struck by a goose. It is estimated that at least 500 geese are in Port Dalhousie between the park and the pier.

The plan for next year is during moulting season when geese can’t fly, up to 600 will be rounded up and shipped to a natural habitat at least 150 kms away. The hope is, their migratory pattern will change so they don’t come back.
